What Are Fire Rated Doors?
Fire rated doors are specifically designed to delay the spread of fire and smoke through commercial buildings for a minimum of 30 minutes. This gives anyone inside more time to make their escape, while protecting other areas of the building to minimise the damage to adjoining floors or neighbouring properties.

When fire comes into contact with fire rated doors, the heat causes the intumescent material to expand, filling the gaps between the door and its frame to stop the fire from spreading. Their frames are similarly fitted with smoke seals, which stop smoke from escaping without completing sealing the doorway.

Where Should Fire Rated Doors Be Installed?

The updated Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 specify that internal fire rated doors should be installed between kitchens and any adjoining rooms in commercial buildings, while stairways and lobbies should also be separated by fire doors to provide a safe means of escape.

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, fire rated doors in commercial buildings must be inspected every 12 months to ensure that they are functioning properly. These inspections must be conducted or facilitated by the Responsible Person for that building, who is typically the building owner, occupier, or an employee who has been nominated for the role.
